VT100 News-Athletes with Disabilities Division Announced for 2017

The Vermont 100 (VT100) is excited to announce the addition of an Athletes with Disability (AWD) Division, starting at the upcoming 2017 race.

Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports Founder Laura Farrell created the Vermont 100 originally as a fundraising event for the nonprofit and the ultra-run continues to be a major fundraiser for the organization to this day. Vermont Adaptive is a nationally recognized organization that empowers people of all abilities through inclusive sports and recreational programming.

As founder of the Vermont 100 mile Endurance run and Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports it gives me great pleasure and joy to now have athletes with disabilities able to participate and compete in this amazing event. This means that ALL athletes that are able and have trained are able to enjoy and challenge themselves at the Vermont 100 mile Endurance race     Laura Farrell, Founder of Both Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports and the Vermont 100.

The AWD Division will include athletes with visual and mobility impairments. AWD athletes will still need to complete the course within the time limits and (if running the 100 mile race) will still need to submit a qualifier race to be eligible to run.

With the history and relationship between the Vermont 100 and Vermont Adaptive, it seems natural to create an Athletes with Disabilities Division for the race, As far as we know, the Vermont 100 will be the first trail or ultra race to include an Athlete with Disabilities Division.   Amy Rusiecki, Race Director, Vermont 100.

The VT100 will make accommodations for AWD athletes to facilitate their participation, such as allowing them to have a guide for the entire race. Further details regarding the race regulations are available at the race website: AWD or https://vermont100endurancerun.blogspot.com/p/awd-division.html.

Participating in a race with an Athlete With Disability division is the epitome of inclusiveness; I am thrilled to toe the line of one of the most prestigious ultras in the country while pushing my mind and body to new challenges. And to do it in a race that benefits Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports, where I first skied with sighted guides, is incredibly gratifying for me. Kyle Robidoux, a runner who is legally blind and plans to race the VT100 this summer.
